It is terrible to hear about bus accidents, especially because they usually transport children. Because they carry large numbers of passengers, bus accidents often result in multiple injuries and fatalities. Unfortunately, the majority of busses do not provide seatbelts to their passengers, and injuries are often caused by this lack of safety restraints.
Buses crash because of negligence on the part of the bus driver or other drivers, dangerous road conditions, high winds, defective tires or parts, or because of excessive speeds. Other types of bus accidents include when busses hit pedestrians or bicyclists due to poor visibility and drivers who are in a hurry.
To stay keep yourself and your children safe:
- Ask your bus company or school system to install seatbelts in busses
- Talk to your children about following all safety rules
- Remain seated while the bus is in motion
- Listen to the bus driver’s directions
- Stay quiet so the driver can concentrate
- Look both ways when leaving the bus and entering the roadway
If you are a bicyclist or a pedestrian, don’t assume the bus driver can see you. Wait until he or she has given you a signal to cross or pass. Make sure to wear a helmet while riding your bike, and wear reflective clothing and gear.
