Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon monoxide poisoning poses a threat to Americans every day. We are exposed to carbon monoxide in our homes, cars and at work.
Carbon monoxide is most commonly found in gas ranges, car exhaust and heating systems. The fumes that come from these appliances are very dangerous to our health and can easily catch fire and explode. It is important that we have a supply of fresh air whenever we are using these appliances.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is hard to diagnose. When someone is exposed to carbon monoxide while they are sleeping, they can die before they show any symptoms. When people are exposed while they are awake, they will show signs of:
- Headache
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Flu-like symptoms
- Chest pain
- Confusion
- Weakness
The best way to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning is to purchase detectors for your home and office. These detectors will warn you when the fumes reach a high level.
If you don’t have a detector and you are using a carbon monoxide appliance, keep the windows open, especially at night. A supply of fresh air will counteract the effects of carbon monoxide.
Also, remember that you should never run your car engine in an enclosed space, like a garage. Carbon monoxide from the exhaust can build up and poison you. Also make sure your car’s tailpipe is never plugged or blocked by material, equipment, or snow. This can also cause carbon monoxide to build up inside your car.
