Robberies
Robberies involve someone stealing directly from a person, while burglaries occur when someone breaks into the victim’s home, car, or office. Robberies include muggings and armed robberies, and robbers typically steal purses, wallets, briefcases, watches, jewelry, and any other valuables the person is carrying.
Robberies are terrifying for the victim. The crime usually occurs in places where no one can be witness, such as dark streets, subways, parking lots, or empty buildings. Robbers usually threaten physical violence if the victim doesn’t cooperate, and many people do get hurt.
Here are some ways to stay safe:
- Don’t go anywhere alone. Robbers target people who are alone, especially women.
- Don’t walk in dark, vacant areas. Stay with people, and stay in well-lit areas.
- If you can’t find someone to walk with you, call for a police escort, even if it’s only to walk you to your car. Police are more than happy to send someone.
- Don’t wear valuable jewelry, and only carry one or two credit cards (and write down the phone numbers so you can cancel them immediately).
- Don’t fight; give up your belongings immediately. Your goal is to get the robber to leave you alone as soon as possible.
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Check the backseat of your car before you get in.
- Take a self-defense class; know how to react if you are attacked.
- If you are robbed, try to remember everything you can about the robber, including appearance, clothing, voice, and the direction of escape. Call 911 immediately.
Some people carry pepper spray, although there are many different opinions about the safety and effectiveness of spray. Some experts believe that it is too easy for the robber to take the spray and use it against the victim, while others believe using spray might anger the robber and cause further harm to the victim. However, many people carry pepper spray to use in case of robberies or assaults.
