Sulzer Defective Hip Implant

Hip implants are used for patients who experience severe hip pain from broken bones, arthritis and damaged cartilage. More than 300,000 people suffer from broken hips each year because of falls, car accidents and infections that weaken the bones. Broken hips almost always require surgery because blood supply to the broken hip can be cut off or diminished, which can stop the hip from healing. Sometimes, several screws can be inserted into the hip to hold it together. Other times, a half-hip replacement is enough to treat the injury. However, sometimes an entire hip replacement is necessary.

A hip implant can be secured in a patient’s body by using bone cement (glue) or by using a material that encourages the patient’s own bone to grow into the implant. Sulzer Orthopedics hip implant was one of the latter. Sulzer Orthopedics manufactures many types of implants, including implants for knee injuries, shoulder injuries and elbow injuries as well.

Between 1997 and 1999, 20,000 patients were given the Sulzer hip implant, which later began to fail because of loosening parts and an oil residue that remained from the manufacturing plant. This residue stopped the bone from attaching to the implant. Patients experienced pain and difficulty moving or sitting. People with defective hip implants have trouble with daily activities and working, which can result in a loss of employment and lost wages. Replacing the defective hips is costly and time-consuming.

The specific model in question is the Sulzer Inter-Op, products “Hemispherical,” “Rim Flare,” “Revision,” and Protusio.” The shell of the Inter-Op functions like a socket and is inserted into a part of the pelvis, while the receiving end holds the thighbone. You can visit www.fda.gov and for more information on this and any other recalls.

If you have a Sulzer implant, and you begin to experience pain in your groin or thigh, or pain when you sit or walk, contact a personal injury attorney immediately. It’s important to get your medical expenses covered. You could be compensated for pain and suffering, all past and future medical expenses, and any lost wages or future earning losses.
