Vail Enclosed Bed Systems

Vail Enclosed Bed Systems are no longer manufactured as of June 2005. However, the bed systems can still be found in some health care businesses, and they pose serious risk to patients, including entrapment and suffocation.

Vail beds are used in hospitals, nursing homes, and in patients’ homes. They are used for patients who are at risk from falling from beds or wandering. At least eight deaths and dozens of serious injuries have been linked to the beds. Many involved children aged 16 and younger. The FDA advises anyone who owns or uses a Vail bed to stop using it immediately. This includes models Vail 500, Vail 1000 and Vail 2000 bed systems.

If the Vail bed system is the only option available for the patients, the FDA advises caregivers to:
  • Use the beds only for patients who are at least 45 inches tall and weigh at least 46 pounds.
  • Patients who are violent, aggressive, combative, suicidal, have multiple lines, or who have a PICA eating disorder should not be allowed to use the bed because their burrowing behavior can lead to injury or death.
  • The manufacturer-recommended mattress is the only mattress that should be used with the system.
  • The side rails must stay in “Up” and locked positions. They can only be taken down when the patient is being moved.
  • The bed must remain in a flat position when the patient is unattended.
  • The patient should never be unattended if the canopy side is unzipped.
  • For the Vail 1000 and 2000 models, the “Hi” position increases the risk of entrapment.
According to the FDA, entrapment zones include the areas between the side rails and mattresses, between the mattresses and the canopy, and between the end rails and mattresses. However, entrapment zones are not only limited to these areas.
