Inadequate Security

Inadequate security can lead to break-ins, theft, robberies, burglaries, or worse. There are many ways to secure a building. Homes, offices, warehouses, construction sites and other properties that need to be protected can have:

  • alarm systems
  • security guards
  • a fence with a guarded gate
  • watch dogs
  • motion detection lights
  • a combination of the above

When appropriate security is not in place, valuable items may be stolen and people can get injured. Burglars might break in through a window or door, and without an alarm, they can silently steal valuable goods and money.

·        A “burglary” is when people illegally enter a building or property with the intent of committing a crime, such a stealing.

·        A “robbery” is different from a burglary because there are usually people present, and the thieves might take money or valuable from those people as well as stealing items from within the building.

Unfortunately, sometimes security systems can fail. An alarm system can have faulty wiring or malfunctioning parts, a security guard might fail to show up for work or might let in the wrong people, thieves might be able to climb over a fence without being noticed and slip past any watch dogs, and motion detection lights could fail to work or burn out. When security systems fail, it is an open invitation for people looking to commit a crime.

Although theft is a horrible crime to have to experience, being attacked in person is worse. Security systems are in place not only to protect valuable items, but people as well. There have been many cases in which people are shot and killed, or raped or kidnapped, because an adequate security system was not in place or it failed.

It is the responsibility of the property owner to have adequate security systems in place. Make sure to ask your landlord, work supervisor, and storage facility owner what kind of security they have in place. Also, if you are worried about walking to your car after dark, ask if there are guards available to walk you to your car, or call the police. Police will usually be more than happy to escort you to your car. If you do experience property damage, theft or injury because of inadequate security, contact a personal injury attorney to seek compensation.
