Refinery Explosions

Refinery explosions result in serious injuries and death, and they don’t just affect the people who work there. They affect entire communities, because fires and dangerous gasses can spread beyond the property line of the refinery. Oil is highly explosive, and therefore very difficult to work with safely.

There are more than 150 oil refineries in the U.S. When they explode, people are killed and gasses spread through the air. In 2005, there was an explosion near London, England. A thick, black cloud covered much of the country, and health officials warned people that they might experience coughing and wheezing symptoms. Exercising or spending too much time outdoors during these conditions can result in permanent injuries.

Recent refinery explosions include:

  • a 2005 explosion at the BP Refinery in Texas that killed 15 and injured more than 170. Luckily, people living nearby were warned and evacuated and were not exposed to harmful chemicals. The explosion occurred because of negligent maintenance, mismanagement and operator error.
  • a 2004 explosion at the Giant Industries Ciniza Refinery in Gallup, New Mexico seriously injured four workers. It was caused when workers tried to remove a malfunctioning pump.
  • a 1998 explosion at a Washington refinery killed five people. At the time of the explosion, the plant had been down because of a lightning strike, which took out all of its power.
  • a 1994 explosion at the Torrance Refinery in California injured 28 people, four critically. The explosion was caused by operator error.

The majority of refinery explosions are caused by negligence, poor maintenance, faulty equipment and operator error. Workplace injuries sustained in refinery explosions include burns, which is the most common injury, broken bones, brain injury, paralysis and injuries associated with smoke inhalation. Burn injuries, both chemical and thermal, occur from the burning oil and from the smoke. People who inhale smoke can experience:

  • black mucous in nose, eyes and mouth
  • irritation
  • shortness of breath
  • cough

If you are injured in a refinery explosion, contact a doctor immediately. After you’re treated, contact a personal injury lawyer who specializes in refinery explosions. You could be compensated for your medical expenses, pain and suffering.
