Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program (EEOICP) is designed to compensate nuclear weapons workers in case of injury or death. The program covers medical, lost wages and other expenses.

Nuclear weapons workers are employees of the Department of Energy and any agencies, contractors, and companies who are affiliated with the department. Employees of these organizations may suffer:
  • Chemical burns
  • Radiation poisoning
  • Lung disease
  • Cancer
The program is typically reserved for people who have been exposed to radiation, beryllium or silica and have cancer or other diseases related to that exposure. Survivors of deceased employees are also entitled to certain benefits under the program. Also, uranium miners, millers and ore transporters are covered under the program.

Employees can be exposed to the harmful toxins during testing, production, assembly and transportation of nuclear materials.

The program was instated in 2001 and since then has compensated 32,000 workers and survivors with more than $3 billion.
