Complete Moisture Plus is a contact lens solution that was recalled in May 2007 because of the presence of a parasite in the solution. The product was manufactured by Advanced Medical Optics, and was linked to a rare eye infection that can lead to blindness. Anyone using the solution should discard the solution and buy new lenses and lens cases.
Complete Moisture Plus can contain a parasite that causes an infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis. Some patients may require a corneal transplant, while others go blind. The infection can occur even with patients who don’t use Complete Moisture Plus, but the risk is seven times greater for those who do.
This parasite is common; many people will come in contact with it during their lifetime. While most will not get sick, when the parasite gains easy access through a contact lens, the chances of sickness are increased. The parasite can also cause a serious infection of the brain and spinal cord as well as infection that spreads through other organs.
Symptoms of the infection in the eye (Acanthamoeba keratitis) include:
- redness
- eye pain
- blurred vision
- sensitivity
- sensation of something scratching or tearing the eye
According to the FDA, all contact wearers should avoid infections by cleaning contacts thoroughly, washing hands with soap and water before handling lenses, and storing lenses in proper containers. People using Complete Moisture Plus should discard the solution, the lenses, and the lens case immediately.
Almost 3 million of the Complete Moisture Plus packets were recalled, but some still may remain on shelves or in homes. The outbreak has affected almost 200 patients.
If your eyes were damaged or injured by Complete Moisture Plus, if you needed a corneal transplant or have become blind, contact a personal injury attorney immediately.
