    ReNu MultiPlus Solution

ReNu products, including ReNu MultiPlus Solution, have been linked to a fungus, Fusarium, which can cause eye injury and blindness. Some users needed to undergo eye surgery. Twelve lots of ReNu MultiPlus were also recalled in 2007 due to excessive quantities of iron inside the solution, which totals more than 1 million containers of solution in the U.S.

Recalled containers of ReNu MultiPlus have the expiration date “2008-03” on the side. Consumers with affected bottles should discard them. As for the fungus, for now, the FDA says that to prevent the fungus, ReNu MultiPlus Solution users should make sure to follow careful hygiene instructions.

    Preventative hygiene instructions include:
    • washing hands with soap and water and drying with a sanitary, lint-free towel before handling lenses
    • following doctor prescription instructions exactly
    • keeping the contact lens case clean and replacing it every three to six months
    • removing lenses immediately and contacting a doctor if you experience any signs of infection

What are some important things I should know about ReNu MultiPlus Solution?

ReNu MultiPlus Solution can cause lenses to develop a fungus that causes an infection called Fusarium keratitis. Some patients may require a corneal transplant, while others go blind.

Who is ReNu MultiPlus Solution for?

ReNu MultiPlus Solution is for people who wear soft contact lenses. Although the manufacturers of ReNu have withdrawn ReNu Contact Solution from Singapore and Hong Kong markets after many people were injured by the Fusarium fungus, ReNu Contact Solution and MultiPlus is still available in the U.S.

Lens wearers should make sure to take lenses out at night, which is when they are most susceptible to the fungus.

What side effects can ReNu MultiPlus Solution cause?

Symptoms of the infection in the eye (Fusarium keratitis) include:

    • redness
    • tearing
    • eye pain
    • blurred vision
    • sensitivity
    • discharge
    • sensation of something scratching or tearing the eye
When should I contact my doctor?

Contact your doctor if you notice any signs of infection, as listed above. Also, contact a personal injury attorney if you were injured by ReNu MultiPlus Solution.
