Explanation and Causes:

A dislocated shoulder is defined by the bone of the upper arm sliding out of the socket of the shoulder bone. For this to happen tendons and ligaments are stretched and strained causing severe pain. Damaged tissue surrounding the shoulder joint usually accompanies a dislocated shoulder. Because the shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body it is also the most dislocated joint in the body.

Common causes include athletics, trauma as in a car accident, and falling on the extended arm trying to catch oneself.
