Explanation and Causes:

MCL stands for medial collateral ligament while LCL stands for lateral collateral ligament. The LCL is on the outside of the knee protecting the knee from being pushed outward while the MCL is on the inside protecting the knee from being pushed inward. Injury to either of these two ligaments is not quite as crucial to the health of the knee in its functioning, nor are they quite as painful.

Symptoms:

  • Tenderness or pain along either side of the knee depending on the ligament
  • Swelling in the knee
  • Instability in the knee

Diagnosis and Tests:

  • MRI
  • X-ray

Treatment:

Whether a stretch, a partial tear or a full tear, the rehabilitation process is lighter and quicker than the ACL type of injury. Surgery is reserved for non-healing injuries after a full regimen of rehabilitation.

Prevention:

Don’t do anything stupid, like a dukes-of-hazard over the hood of your car or tipping a cow over on to yourself. Be smart!
