Explanation and Causes:

Tendons are strong cords that attach a muscle to a bone. They’re supportive and mobilizing in function and like anything else are vulnerable to damage. Tendonitis occurs when the tendon becomes inflamed or irritated. Several factors can be responsible for this. One of the primary causes of tendonitis is infection. Others include:

  • Injury or trauma
  • Repetitive stress or overuse such as in athletic activities
  • Normal wear and tear with age

The most common joints for tendonitis are shoulders, elbows and knees but also can affect hips, heels, and wrists.

Symptoms:

  • Pain increasing with movement and at night
  • Tenderness
  • Mild swelling

Diagnosis and Tests:

  • X-ray to rule out any serious injuries
  • MRI
  • Blood for serious infections or immunological diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis

Treatment:

  • Rest for the joint
  • Ice 3-4 times a day for 15-20 minutes each
  • Corticosteroid injection
  • Physical therapy and exercise therapy to increase the amount of force the tendon is capable of handling without pain. This also adds to flexibility and strength.

Prevention:

Adopt thorough stretching and warm-up exercises before any strenuous activity
