Explanation and Causes:

The eardrum is a membrane that separates the inner ear from the outer ear. It is the structure responsible for converting sound waves or vibrations into nerve impulses that can be registered in the brain. The eardrum also acts as a barrier to defend against bacterial infections and other debris that might enter the ear. When the eardrum is ruptures all functions of the inner and outer ear are for the most part lost. Anything from a loud noise to an infection like otitis media can rupture the eardrum. Other ways are by simply sticking things in the ear to forcefully or a hard blow to the head as in a car accident.

Symptoms:

  • Hearing loss
  • Sharp ear pain
  • Pus leakage or bleeding from the ear
  • Constant ringing in the ear

Diagnosis and Tests:

The eardrum and any injury can be seen by an otoscope.

Treatment:

A common practice for ruptured eardrums is the eardrum patch that sits over the eardrum protecting it so it can heal properly. It prevents infection and dirt from entering the middle ear. If conventional methods don’t work, surgery is always an option.
