Explanations and Causes: The meniscus of the knee is a flat bi-lobed disc of cartilage that sits between the femur of the upper leg and the bones of the lower leg. Its function is to lubricate the movement, absorb the shock or compression, and limit over flexion or bending of the knee. A tear or rupture of the meniscus is usually caused by hard twisting, rotating, or over bending of the knee. When this happens, occasionally the torn part of the meniscus can lock the joint in the straight or bent positions which typically requires surgery. In older people the meniscus can be torn from just jogging or putting irregular pressure on the knees. This happens as the meniscus begins to degenerate little by little with age. Symptoms:

12|Sep|2007 1I’ve actually torn my meniscus once while snowboarding. I went to three different doctors and had them all check it out, 2 out of 3 wanted to do surgery just to check if I had torn my ACL but the 3rd doctor just prescribed physical therapy, so that’s the route I took. My knee healed fine with just physical therapy.
