Injuries from playing football aren’t only common, they are expected. And when they happen, they can result in devastating game losses.

Many believe the Chargers recently lost their Super Bowl bid because of injuries suffered by their top players, not just because of the Patriots’ perfect record. The Chargers’ LaDainian Tomlinson couldn’t play through his injured left knee, and many fans and sports analysts believe their recent loss could have been prevented had he been able to play.

So what injuries are the Giants and the Patriots facing going into today’s game? As of January 18, the Patriots were facing the loss of Mel Mitchell, Tom Brady and Rodney Harrison due to various injuries. The Giants, as of this morning, still don’t know if receiver Plaxico Burress or defensive end Osi Umenyiora will play either.

Giants’ Umenyiora is listed as having a thigh injury and missed practice on Friday. However, he is listed as “probable” on the roster. Guard Rich Seubert, who suffered a knee injury, and cornerback Kevin Dockery, who suffered a hip injury, both attended practice and are also listed as “probable.”

Patriots’ backup safety Mel Mitchell has been on injured reserve since mid January, and Tom Brady is believed to suffer from a sprained right ankle, although the Patriots are using their old fall-back to hide the real injury from the media: According to the Patriots, both suffer from a shoulder injury, as supposedly does Rodney Harrison. All three are listed as “probable” players, however.

We’ll just have to wait and see who plays…and what happens.
