A Washington D.C. resident, Raelyn Campbell, filed a $54 million lawsuit against Best Buy for a lost computer, which she says cost her time, money, and possibly her identity. Campbell took her laptop to Best Buy to get repaired, but instead got the run-around. For weeks, Best Buy employees told Campbell the computer wasn’t ready, or they were still waiting for parts, etc. Finally, one of the employees admitted the computer was lost.
Campbell, who works for a nonprofit Asia research firm and travels frequently, said the loss wasn’t only devastating to her career, but she also lost thousands of dollars of music and all of her personal photos—memories she’d stored for almost a year. Most importantly, Campbell had sensitive information about her identity, including her tax returns with all her personal information, stored on the computer. She has since enrolled in a credit checking service, which has cost her more time and money.
Best Buy didn’t do much to compensate her for her loss. They offered her a $900 gift certificate, even though she had paid more than $1,000 for the computer. Instead of accepting, Campbell was furious. She told Best Buy she might consider a $2100 cash compensation, but the company refused.
So Campbell filed a lawsuit in November asking for $54 million in damages. Although she is the first to admit the damages are high, she says her goal was to bring media attention to the way Best Buy handled her computer loss…and possible identity theft.
