The Internet presents consumers with a wide variety of benefits, including being able to fill their prescriptions and order medication from the comfort of their own homes. However, shopping online for medication can be dangerous. Counterfeit drug operations are becoming more and more common, and it is important for consumers to follow a few safety rules when shopping online. According to the FDA, the easiest ways to make sure you are purchasing legitimate, legal medication is to make sure the site asks for your prescription and that a pharmacist is available to answer your questions. Ask the pharmacist to verify licensure and VIPPS certification (see below).
Next, check the license. If the license isn’t from the U.S., don’t buy from them. Also, adhere to standard identity protection rules: Don’t give out any personal information or account numbers without being certain the site is legitimate and will protect your privacy. Make sure there is someone available to answer your questions about privacy; if they don’t care to help you before you make a purchase, they won’t care when your identity is stolen either.
Talk to your doctor about your medication; ask about any problems with counterfeit drugs. Some medications are easier to counterfeit, and this could cause huge risks to your health. For example, AIDS, cancer and blood pressure medications are frequently counterfeited, which could result in you getting diluted doses or medication that contains harmful ingredients. If this is the case, consider having your prescription filled at a local pharmacy that you and your doctor trust.
You can find a list of drugs that the FDA recommends you do NOT buy online at www.fda.gov. These medications are prone to counterfeiting and require special safety restrictions on how they are distributed. They include:
Finally, the site should be listed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy as a VIPPS site, or a Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Site.
