What’s going on with America’s youth? As of today, there have been five school shootings in the past week, leaving 11 dead and more than 20 injured, some critically. The shootings took place in Illinois, California, Tennessee, Ohio and Louisiana.

Today in Illinois, a former student of Northern Illinois University entered a lecture hall and shot into crowds of students with a shotgun and two handguns. He killed seven students and injured 16 before killing himself.

On February 12 in California, a 15-year-old boy died after being shot by a 14-year-old classmate. More than 20 other students were in the room when the shooting took place. Police are calling the shooting a pre-meditated hate crime.

On February 11, in Memphis, Tennessee, a 17-year-old shot a 19-year-old classmate and then handed the gun to the teacher. This incident occurred a week after another Memphis student was shot in the leg during an argument.

On February 8, a female student shot two other women at a college in Louisiana before killing herself. Both students died from their wounds.

Finally, on February 7, a gunman shot and wounded his estranged wife as her fifth-grade class watched. He later shot himself during a standoff with police.

Many say that preventing these crimes starts by working together as a community to talk to youth about settling disputes without fighting, getting mental help for those who need it, and installing metal detectors in schools.
