Trampolines are incredibly fun for most children and adults. They send you flying up in the air again and again and can be a great form of exercise. However, there is no end to the injuries they can cause, especially when used improperly.

Trampolines can cause broken necks, head injuries, brain damage, spinal cord injuries, paralysis, broken arms and legs, dislocations, muscle damage, and even burns. According to the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, more than 240,000 people have to be treated for their trampoline injuries, and most of these people are younger than 15 years old. There have also been multiple reports of deaths associated with trampolines.

Here are some safety tips:
  • Trampolines should only be used under close supervision of an adult.
  • Make sure the area is well-lit and away from hazardous objects.
  • Place the trampoline at ground level and surround it with a specially-designed net to contain the jumpers. However, remember that this does not prevent injuries that occur from jumping itself.
  • Cover springs, hooks and frame with shock-absorbing pads made for the trampoline.
  • Check trampoline and associated equipment for wear.
  • Avoid somersaults and difficult moves while jumping.
  • Only allow one jumper at a time. More than 75 percent of injuries occur when there are two jumpers at a time.
  • Keep knees bent to avoid jarring the back and spine.
