According to a report from the National Center for Public Policy and higher Education, the rising cost of college threatens to put higher education out of reach for most students.

The report found that from 1982 to 2007 the median family income rose 147 percent, compared to college tuition and fees, which increased 439 percent. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade which can be attributed to the raising cost of education.

“If we go on this way for another 25 years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” said Patrick Callan, president of center. He notes that although college enrollment has continued to rise, it is unclear how long that trend will continue.

This explains the need for so many students to work part-time or full-time jobs. The cost of higher education is a burden the family can no longer carry.
