What type of injury can bring down a 7′6" superstar? According to Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, a stress injury.

Yao Ming | Stress Injury

China’s national treasure was out of the game at the end of February and on crutches. What his fans are most worried about is his ability to play in the Beijing Olympics…and because he is reveled as a hero in China, fans are more than upset.

In a press conference, Yao said: “If I cannot play in the Olympics for my country at this time, it will be the biggest loss in my career to right now.”

According to his doctors, Yao now faces a few months of recovery time, which should put him back in good health right in time for the Olympics. That, to a nation of more than 1.3 billion people, will surely come as good news.

Yao underwent surgery yesterday on his left foot, which had a stress fracture in the tarsal navicular bone. A stress fracture is exactly what it sounds like: a fracture of the bone due to pounding, running, and stress.

Some fans believe Yao has been playing on the fracture for quite some time, and that his sudden announcement and subsequent surgery could be because the Chinese government got involved to make sure their superstar would be ready. The timing is interesting…the surgery and recovery will be complete one month before the Olympics, leaving Yao just enough time to get back in the game.
