The FDA recently warned healthcare providers about the injuries caused by denture cleansers.

Injuries from denture cleansers include allergic reactions, seizures, choking, and even death. As of February 14, the FDA had received 73 reports of adverse events, both when the denture cleaner was used properly as well as improperly.

Allergic reactions are caused by the ingredient persulfate, a known allergen. Persulfates help clean and bleach the dentures. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:
  • irritation
  • tissue damage
  • gum tenderness
  • rash
  • urticaria
  • difficulty breathing
  • hypotension (low blood pressure)
Misuse of the denture cleansers can also lead to injury. Patients who are instructed on proper use of the cleanser have gargled and swallowed the liquid, leading to abdominal pain, vomiting, seizures, hypotension, and difficulty breathing.

Ingestion of the denture cleanser can lead to:
  • esophageal ulcers
  • abdominal pain
  • vomiting
  • burns
  • irritation
  • breathing problems
  • hypotension
  • seizure
  • gum tenderness
  • bleaching of tissue
  • blood in the urine
Doctors and other healthcare providers are instructed to make sure their patients understand how to use denture cleansers, and manufacturers of denture cleansers are asked to modify their labeling so patients understand the risks.

Patients who are injured by denture cleansers can report their adverse reaction to the FDA at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm or by phone at 1-800-FDA-1088.
