The FDA issued an alert today about the prescription cough medicine Tussionex, which contains dangerous and potentially deadly hydrocodone. The FDA issued the alert after receiving several adverse response reports, including death, associated with Tussionex. The cough medicine is approved for use in adults and children older than 6 years of age. However, it has been linked to overdoses, which lead to serious injury and death.
According to the FDA, one of the main ways to safeguard yourself against injury from Tussionex is to follow the instructions that come with the medication, including waiting 12 hours or more between doses and never giving it to children younger than 6 years of age.
Hydrocodone can cause fatal breathing problems, noticeable from symptoms like trouble breathing, slowed heartbeat, severe sleepiness, and cold, clammy skin.
The FDA reminds patients to follow doctors’ and pharmacists’ instructions carefully to avoid complications with prescription medications.
