New York may soon be out a governor. Gov. Eliot Spitzer is rumored to be resigning any moment now, and many say it’s not soon enough.

Spitzer was recently linked to a prostitution ring after he came under suspicion for making payments to a call-girl bank account. With the help of court-ordered wiretaps, police tracked Spitzer to the Washington, D.C. Mayflower Hotel on February 13 where he arranged to meet a prostitute. Because the call girl crossed state lines on his dime, it could become a federal case. Although Spitzer has not yet been charged, he has retained a large Manhattan law firm to represent him.

The irony of the story and the shock for New Yorkers comes from the fact that Spitzer has been widely known as the governor who fights corruption. Spitzer, who is married and has three teenage daughters, apologized to his family and the public in a statement on Monday: "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family…I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public, who I promised better."

According to court papers, Spitzer asked for a call girl who was a "petite, pretty brunette." He reserved a separate room for her in the hotel, and he had to sneak past his security guards to visit her.

Some lawmakers are giving him an ultimatum: Resign or face impeachment. He is expected to make a decision today or tomorrow.
