New York Lt. Governor David Paterson once told reporters that he had a desire to prove to people that he can be successful, and now he’ll have his chance.

Paterson will take over on Monday, March 17 now that Eliot Spitzer has resigned from his position as governor after being caught spending more than $80,000 on prostitutes. Paterson will be the first black governor of New York. He will also be the first legally-blind governor in the U.S.

Paterson was nearly blind from infancy, he graduated from an Ivy League college, and completed law school. He will work to complete Spitzer’s agenda of reducing healthcare costs and improving schools, but many believe he will also propose many changes of his own.

Eliot Spitzer resigned March 12 after being caught a month earlier paying a call girl to travel over state lines to visit him in a New Jersey hotel room. Because the prostitute traveled over state lines, Spitzer can be charged with a federal crime. He has secured the representation of one of the best law firms in Manhattan.

Paterson will work to move past the chaos Spitzer has caused and get back to the business of leading the state of New York.
