There is more than one doctor out there who is making a connection between the greater number of sports injuries that people are suffering and the food that they eat.

One doctor in particular, Dr. Mike Vidmar, says those injuries are all because of athletes’ diets, according to Coloradoan.com. Preservatives and unfiltered tap water are the primary culprits, says Vidmar.

That makes sense. Think of your body as a car. If you put bad gas in that car, it isn’t going to run as well and it could break down. That is not unlike our bodies.

Part of getting a good, balanced diet (even if you’re not an athlete), includes drinking clean water. You can make sure your water is safe by putting a filter attachment on your faucet, filtering it through your refrigerator (if it has the appropriate equipment), or buying filtered water from your local grocery store.

Drinking plenty of water during the day, especially if you’re an athlete, will help flush toxins out of your system.

The other part of a healthy diet includes eating a wide variety of grains, vegetables, and proteins, including nuts and meats. Eating organic is healthier; there are less preservatives, hormones, and harmful additives. Organic food is available from any whole foods, health food, or natural food store.

However, be wary of labels that say “all-natural.” Those aren’t organic, and they aren’t as healthy. They probably include some form of natural ingredients, but they still have preservatives and unhealthy ingredients.
