Nine months ago, 6-year-old Abigail Taylor sat on the drain of the Minneapolis Golf Club kiddie pool. The drain was so powerful that it sucked out 21 feet of her small intestine, leaving her near death. After nine months of surgeries and complications, Abigail has died. According to her family attorney Bob Bennett, her parents were with her when she died Thursday evening in a Nebraska hospital.

Abigail’s injury and her death have led to federal legislation to make swimming pools safer. This includes reducing the suction force on drains and/or developing a protective cover to put over the top.

Her family filed suit last November against the pool manufacturer, Sta-Rite, and the golf club. According to their attorney, Abigail’s lifetime medical expenses could have totaled more than $30 million. The family’s lawsuit cited three prior disembowelments due to Sta-Rite equipment.
