Almost 200 people have been evacuated from homes and businesses within a half-mile radius of the meat plant that caught fire on Easter day. Most were still forced to stay away after concerns that the fire and heat might cause an anhydrous ammonia tank to catch fire as well.

The Cargill Meat Solutions plant employees about 800 people and produces more than 2 million pounds of frozen ground beef patties and steaks every week. For a town the size of Booneville, (4,000 residents), having the plant shut down means a lot of unhappy times. Many are filing for unemployment today.
 
Luckily, no one was injured in the fire. Officials are still worried about injuries from smoke inhalation, leaking ammonia gas, and other possible lung injuries.
 
The damage to the plant is estimated at more than $100 million, and it just underwent a $40 million expansion. There were no cattle slaughter operations on the plant, so no animals died in the fire.
