Cargill Meat Solutions, the same company whose Arkansas meat plant went up in flames Easter morning, just finished recalling almost 2 million pounds of ground beef because of E. coli. The first recall happened in October 2007, and involved 845,000 pounds of frozen ground beef after an investigation by the Minnesota Departments of Health and Agriculture. Three people became ill after eating the infected beef.
The second recall took place in November after more beef was discovered to be infected with e. coli. That recall involved 1,084,384 pounds of meat processed at Cargill’s Wyalusing, PA plant.
E. coli is a deadly bacterium that causes people to become very ill. Symptoms include stomach pain, diarrhea, and dehydration. It can be fatal. People who are young, old, or already suffering from illnesses are most likely to acquire e. coli sickness.
