Thirty-seven people were arrested as Olympic torch-bearers attempted to proceed through France on this leg of the torch’s journey to China. The final leg of the relay, through Paris, was cancelled after activists tried on several occasions to grab the torch, douse it with water, and stop the procession from continuing. Two activists almost got away with the torch before they were tackled by police.

Activists were protesting human rights, environmental, and political conditions in China, a country in which many people don’t think the Olympics should be held. The protests began as the torch passed the Eiffel Tower, and the flame had to be taken onto a bus several times to prevent it from being put out or taken.

People upset about the torch relay threw cups, plastic bottles, and even food at torch bearers, including an athlete in a wheelchair. However, there were no injuries reported. There were some counter-demonstrations, held by people supporting China and carrying Chinese flags.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, is considering boycotting the Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing depending upon what happens in Tibet.

Torch relay directors are also concerned about similar protests in San Francisco and New Delhi. In fact, there are already hundreds of people in California taking part in protests before Wednesday’s San Francisco relay. Activists say they are trying to draw attention to the torture and imprisonment of religious and political dissidents in China.
