Travelers flying with American Airlines aren’t happy this week; flights are being cancelled across the country, leaving passengers stranded at airports and struggling to get to destinations on time.  This is the second round of cancellations in less than two weeks.

American Airlines cancelled almost 500 flights yesterday and today, affecting as many as 50,000 passengers. The flights were cancelled after the FAA found potential wiring problems in American Airlines’ MD 80 planes, of which there are more than 300 that fly domestically. Many of the planes are more than 15 years old.

The FAA is cracking down on four other airlines, which have remained unnamed, as well. This follows complaints that the FAA was too lax in 2007 when inspecting airlines, including Southwest, which failed to comply with regulations. Southwest was later fined $10.2 million for failing to meet regulations.

American Airlines failed to fix wiring bundles that were tied improperly. Many passengers are upset that this repair could have been made during first inspections, and weren’t.
