Actor Richard Gere, known as "Hollywood’s most outspoken Buddhist," joined the protests centered around the Olympic torch in San Francisco today. He is encouraging people to act peacefully. Hundreds, even thousands of people have gathered to protest the running of the torch through the city, the one stop it will make in the U.S. before arriving in China. The protests are against China’s alleged human rights violations, and protestors want to make sure all eyes are on China before the Olympics. They are demanding improved conditions for Tibet, including the release of people who are being held and possibly tortured for speaking out against the Chinese government.
Protestors are trying to raise awareness by displaying signs (even climbing up the Golden Gate bridge to hang banners) and by marching in the streets. Some protestors in London and Paris tried to douse the torch with water and grab it from runners’ hands. Gere encouraged protestors to act peacefully and said, “It would be futile and not helpful to anyone if we do something that would create hatred in the minds of the Chinese people.”
San Francisco officials have said they will change the torch’s route, even at the last minute, if needed. Olympic officials will decide this week whether to continue the torch run or take it directly to China after its stop in San Francisco.
