Eight top clothing lines have agreed to pay a combined $320,000 for failing to report the hazards of its drawstring sweatshirts and jackets to the Consumer Product Safety Commission in a timely manner. These clothing companies include:

·         Life is Good
·         True Religion Apparel
·         The Cayre Group
·         DollarDays International
·         Kohl’s Department Stores
·         Seena International
·         Neiman Marcus Group
·         Gildan Activewear SRL

The drawstring clothing presents a strangulation hazard to children. In 1996, the CPSC created a pamphlet designed to help prevent this hazard. According to federal law, manufacturers, retailers, and distributors must tell CPSC within 24 hours if they have a product that poses a threat or substantial risk of injury to the public. None of the companies did this, and the CPSC alleges that they knowingly violated the law. All companies firmly deny this.
