The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently released a list of many things parents and caregivers can do to keep their children safe. The first on the list is being aware of the safety and health risks posed by magnets. Children who swallow magnets are at risk of having them do damage to intestines and delicate stomach lining. The magnets can be attracted to each other, even when they’re inside the body, and even when they are in separate parts of the stomach. This forces the magnets to tear through sensitive intenstinal walls or cut off blood supply. Children should also wear their helmet when riding bikes, skateboarding, skiing, or doing any activities where children are at risk of falling. Head injuries can cause permanent brain injuries or spinal cord damage. This can result in learning disabilities, damage to coordination, and paralysis. Finally, parents and caregivers should make sure furniture is safe and stable. Kids love to climb, and cabinets, tables, and chairs can fall on them. Talk to kids about the risks of climbing on objects, and make sure all furniture is secured properly using brackets or other appropriate hardware.
