Every year, more than 260 children younger than 5 drown in swimming pools, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. These children are usually missing for less than 5 minutes. The best ways to keep your children safe include making sure all pools, hot tubs, and ponds are covered and fenced and children are supervised at all times. Some families put alarms on the areas surrounding pools that sound when someone goes near the water. Finally, rescue equipment such as life preservers, rafts, etc. should be kept near pools for immediate access.
According to the CPSC, most drowning incidents are not noisy and do not include splashing and shouting, making it even more important to:
· Closely supervise children at all times
· Install fences and covers around pools
· Install alarms that alert you when children are near the pool
