Ortiz was out for his second consecutive game on Sunday…all because of a knee bruise. This left the Red Sox down to the Rays, 3-0.
The knee has been giving him trouble for at least a few days, and he has been undergoing treatment for the bruise. Ortiz hurt the knee while diving into first base. Knee injuries can be troubling, and Red Sox trainers are taking no chances. Knee injuries, even those that appear to just be superficial bruises, can sustain further (and sometimes permanent) damage if athletes continue to put stress on them.
Ortiz is not the only one the Red Sox are missing. Right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka was out with the flu, but he is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday.
