The daughter was locked in a sound-proof basement, complete with thick concrete walls and hidden doors that led upstairs and to the outside world. The man’s wife, and the daughter’s mother, claims she never knew what was taking place—that the man had told her the daughter had run away so many years earlier, when she was 18. Many psychologists believe the woman was in denial and was terrorized by her husband to the point that she couldn’t cope and couldn’t comprehend what was going on, even when three of the “secret” children showed up on her front doorstep, with a note pretending the mother lived in a cult and that she had sent them to live with their grandparents.

 

The four other children remained below in the basement, locked away from any sunlight. According to reports, there were eight children, but one died at birth, and the father incinerated its body.

 

The man, Josef Fritzl, 73, confessed to his crimes, which could include kidnapping, false imprisonment, rape, molestation, neglect, sexual abuse, (and the list goes on…), after the eldest secret child, a 19-year-old, was found unconscious and gravely ill. She was taken to a hospital, where authorities appealed for the mother to come forward.

 

After receiving a tip, police found Fritzl, and he released the other three captive children that day.  All are now being held at a hospital and are under close supervision. According to some reports, children’s rooms have been turned into dark rooms, with secret areas for them to crawl into so they feel more comfortable.
