What would sports be without cheerleaders? They provide entertainment, rev up the crowd’s excitement, and perform dances to all our favorite songs. However, it’s no wonder why there are so many cheerleading injuries every year. Cheerleaders are launched high into the air, and they ask their bodies to perform amazing feats of strength and flexibility, like this:
Some injuries aren’t as serious, (and they are the kind that the male trainers love to help fix, as seen below):
But some cheerleading injuries are very serious. Cheerleaders often suffer head injuries like concussions, back and spine injuries that can cause paralysis, and broken arms and ribs.
Kristi Yamaoka, a cheerleader at Southern Illinois University, suffered a chipped vertebra, a concussion and a collapsed lung. She has since made full recovery, but her injuries brought the dangers of cheerleading to national attention:
Yamaoka continued to cheer and make motions with arms while she was carried off the court. She later told reporters her accident, which consisted of falling 15 feet onto her head, happened because she rolled off the back of the pyramid instead of the front, where two male cheerleaders were waiting to catch her.
