My worst injury ever was getting kicked by a horse. It was pretty nasty, actually. The horse I was walking behind got spooked, backed up, and kicked me in the chest with both hind legs. The blow threw me backwards, and I thought I had broken my ribs. My arm hurt, my ribs hurt, and I couldn’t breathe without gasping for about an hour. But after I got checked out by a doctor, I learned that I was just bruised. Badly. It was very scary!

My friend Marissa was recently involved in a motorcycle accident. She’s a hairstylist, and she left her salon on her motorcycle, going about 30 mph down a little road in the main part of town. A woman in a truck didn’t see her, and proceeded through a stop sign. Marissa saw her at the last minute, and swerved, laying the motorcycle down on top of herself. Her left hip had a hematoma so big that she had to have it worked on surgically by a doctor. Her left thumb was also badly jammed, and she couldn’t work for about six weeks, resulting in major financial losses! Her medical bills were also over $25,000, and she had to put it all on credit cards because she didn’t have health insurance. The insurance company for the woman who was at fault tried to settle with Marissa for $20K, but she knew that wouldn’t even cover half of all the bills she would have to pay to get her motorcycle repaired and to continue to get treated by her doctor. So she said no, and she hired a personal injury attorney who is helping her get ALL of her expenses paid for.

Another friend, Mike, is a mountain climber. He was climbing a route in Utah called "Lightning Crack," and it was named that for good reason. Before he knew what was happening, he got struck by lightning, leaving him temporarily paralyzed and unconscious. His friend who was belaying climbed up and lowered Mike down, but he thought he was dead. He got Mike airlifted to the University of Utah hospital, where he recovered, leaving burns along one side of his body and damage in his left eye.

Bruce, a mountain biker, was competing in a downhill race when his front tire, later found to be defective, bent under his weight and sent him flying over the top of his bike. Bruce bit off the tip of his tongue when he landed, as well as badly breaking his right arm. He had to have his tongue surgically stitched back together, and he will suffer a speech impediment for many years.
