Pedro Martinez’ four-year contract with the Mets expires after this season, and Martinez told the New York Daily News that he would like to spend time tending to his father, who is battling brain cancer.

To many, this means the likely end of Martinez’ career. “[My dad’s situation] is taking a toll on me and my family…I haven’t been there for them. I just realized that between last year and this year I haven’t been there for my family, my parents,” Martinez said.
Martinez has also been out since straining his left hamstring April 1 in his only start of the season. The Mets plan to have him throw in the bullpen later this week.
According to Martinez, his father is nearing the end of his life. “He’s stable, but he’s not going to get any better. He can’t take any more chemo. We’re letting him have a nice end of his life. The chemo is not going to help him. If they give him the chemo that might be it,” he told the Daily News.
