Grand Theft Auto IV was released April 29, and like its predecessors, it has already generated a lot of controversy. Many are worried about the violence and criminal activities the game contains, like killing police officers, abusing and killing women, and stealing cars.
![]() Already, there have been actual incidents of violence around the world related to the game. One man in London was stabbed by a stranger when he cut in line to buy his copy of Grand Theft Auto. Another man had his jaw broken when two teenagers mugged him and stole the copy of the game he was carrying. In 2006, a lawsuit blamed the game for three New Mexico murders committed by a 14-year-old boy.
The game is quickly becoming the all-time best selling entertainment game around the world. The game is expected to sell more than 12 million copies by the end of 2008.
![]() Advocates of the game say it isn’t all bad. They contend that the game asks players to choose between right and wrong by deciding whether or not they want to kill a “bad guy” or let him live. Opponents of the game argue that killing someone for any reason is always wrong, is always illegal, and is always immoral, and that the game contradicts this and teaches younger players that they have a right to kill others.
Other advocates call the game “an artistic achievement,” even though part of the game involves picking up prostitutes and killing them…or anyone else the player feels like killing. They call it a social commentary on modern life in the United States, and say it points out important contemporary issues.

01|Aug|2010 1Look honestly, yes children below the age of cause and effect comprehension should not play this, now, does this mean that rockstar is the devil because it exposes the evil that there is and that we are all capable of? No, the true criminal is the parents of the children that condone this in there household, how worse is it to watch a movie about murderers and criminals? Its the equivalent, people dont realize that video games and movies are the same media, so ultimately exposing a premature mind to this filth is solely on the parents, it is the parents job to explain why acts of violence are wrong and to make sure they understand, it is the parents job to not let their children fall prey to the video game industry poisoning and brainwashing our youth into a 6 hour a day ritual of video games. I played the game when I was younger but acknowledging the fact that this is a game freed me from any poison that would occur to other children. No one wants to admit that they did a bad job or messed up raising their children but honestly video games are not intended for the youth, their minds are frail and vulnerable to opinions and ways of thought so AMERICA should keep their children from this obstacle that just takes and takes and takes. What I have to say is…… Keep your children away from the media, inform them that people like Sony and Microsoft just want your money and that games take you no where in life, that there is too much to do in the world to be staring at a null black screen.
