John McCain POW | Injuries John McCain endured horrific torture during his time as a POW in Vietnam. He was shot down in 1967 while on a bombing mission, and he was captured and held as a prisoner of war. During his imprisonment, he endured five and a half years of torture, including being denied medical attention for his injuries, being beaten, bound by ropes, and kicked and scratched.

Interestingly, it’s hard to pin down his position on whether the U.S. has the right to torture the people it captures.
For example, although McCain has insisted the U.S. should not be allowed to use waterboarding to force people to talk, he does think it is OK to use other techniques, and he made this clear by voting against the Feinstein Amendment. Those other techniques include stress positions, hypothermia, threats, severe sleep deprivation, and severe sensory deprivation. By voting against the torture ban set forth by the Feinstein Amendment, McCain set a precedent that he will support torture, which goes against everything he has fought so hard against for so many years. Many feel that these flip-flopping actions are a sign of McCain’s integrity…or lack thereof.
Others think McCain’s failure to support the bill is related to his belief that torture does work, as he realized while being held as a POW: “I had learned what we all learned over there,” he said. “Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine.”
