Due to an outbreak of Salmonella poisoning, the FDA released a statement Saturday, June 7, warning consumers to stop eating Roma, raw red plum and red round tomatoes unless they come from these sources, which are deemed safe:

  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Dominican Republic
  • Guatemala
  • Israel
  • Netherlands
  • Puerto Rico
Also, according to the FDA, cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home are OK to eat.
You can find out where the tomatoes are from by checking with your grocery store manager. However, many people are choosing to avoid tomatoes altoghether for a little while.
There have been 145 reported cases of Salmonella nationwide, including almost two dozen hospitalizations. Salmonella is a bacteria that causes serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children and elderly adults. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
The recent outbreak involves Salmonella Saintpaul, a rare strain of the bacteria. The states involved in the outbreak include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
