This year my mother is turning 65. A lifelong elementary school educator, she is now retired and has been complaining she now does nothing that challenges her intellect.

I joked with her saying that teaching 8-year olds couldn’t have been that stimulating. She informed me that it wasn’t necessarily the students that kept her stimulated, it was created new programs and techniques to teach her class that kept her on her toes.

So for her birthday this year I have enrolled her in a couple continuing education classes at the University of Utah. They have a program called lifelong learning that is perfect for retired adults. They offer one-evening get-aways, friday evening date nights, and even sunday field trips.

This is a great gift for parents or grandparents that have everything. If you log onto the nearest college website you can type in the term, continuing education, and you will be presented with a large list of educational opportunities for adults who don’t want to go back to college but would like to learn something on a higher education level.
