Believe it or not, there is now information circulating on the web about how to hold off a heart attack long enough to give yourself time to call 911 or get help! The most important thing, according to these sites, is to remember the symptoms of heart attacks. Recognizing that you are having a heart attack is the first step to surviving one! Most heart attacks start with pain in your chest, difficulty breathing, anxiety and sweating. You may also begin to feel faint.
So what do the sites suggest you do then? Start coughing. Yep, you read correctly. Start coughing repeatedly and vigorously. Take a deep breath before each cough. When coughing, make it deep and prolonged, as if you are going to produce phlegm from deep inside your chest.
The sites instruct you to keep repeating this every two seconds until help arrives. Deep breaths get oxygen into your lungs and the coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep blood circulating.

21|Aug|2008 1This is actually a very dubious claim and has been advised against by institutions like the American Red Cross and American Heart Associations. The biggest reason is that the body of knowledge isn’t very conclusive on the efficacy of the technique by the layperson. There are times when this may be helpful, but they are unequivocal in stating that this would only be under the supervision of medical personnel monitoring your heart with an ECG.
Usually this tip is propagated by email forward, but there are sites here and there that support it, unfortunately, that doesn’t make it any more true. Your best bet during a heart attack is the plain old vanilla advice: learn to recognize the symptoms right away, avoid panic, overly exerting yourself (which trying to cough and breathing deeply could be), and call 911 immediately. Or ask someone for help (to call 911). Trying to administer this form of self help could be just as likely to exacerbate an already deadly situation or worse. It’s best not to fool yourself thinking that a little known and little publicized technique like this will prove more useful than the established advice.
