HCG is a hormone found in pregnant women’s urine. In general, it shows up so the body can make progesterone, which is some sort of steroid. It also appears in the urine of someone who could potentially have a tumor. It appears to be something you would not want unless of course you are pregnant, but some people claim to have found another use for it. HCG has become a popular treatment for obesity, as many users say you can take HCG and maintain normal functioning with only 500 calories a day. The reason you can survive normally on 500 calories a day is because HCG apparently activates stored fat in your love-handle region for your body to digest and use for energy.
Obviously this sounds to good to be true: Your energy level staying normal, you only need to eat 500 calories a day, and the fat you spent years trying to get rid of magically starts begin digested by your body. In 1976, the FTC did not outlaw HCG, but made clinics who use the hormone tell all patients that it is not approved by the FDA and that there is no evidence to suggest it relieves people from having to eat and from having discomfort from being hungry. Also, they have to tell patients that the weight loss that will occur from HCG is not due to HCG, but rather the 500 calorie, near starvation diet you are put on.
This has all become much more prevalent because of an infomercial in 2007 that claimed the government was suppressing this miracle drug, and it was very easy and simple to do. That is not the case. HCG is a potentially very harmful diet plan and should be used with extreme caution and under the supervision of a medically trained staff, if you choose to use HCG at all. Sure, what advocates claim to be true sounds revolutionary, but until empirical evidence backs up their claims and HCG is proven to be safe, save your long-term health and buy a treadmill.
