The Utah Jazz had high expectations leading into the 2008-2009 season, but as of right now things have not gone quite right. The team is playing well, they are 13-9 but with all of the talent on the roster they could be 15-5 or so. However, that is the problem, they have all the talent on the roster, but not on the court. The Utah Jazz have had more injuries than any other team in the NBA. At least they still have a winning record, but unless they are able to get healthy they will be unable to contend for a titlle.

The most significant injury happened in the preseason to Deron Williams. He rolled his ankle in a game versus the Chicago Bulls and is only recently beginning to get back to full strength. After initially only expecting to miss a few games, Williams ended up missing 13 games and took some time to get back into stride. He is the leader of the team and wil need to be at full health if the Jazz expect to compete.

Another significant injury happened to Carlos Boozer. He strained his left quadriceps tendon and has missed ten straight games. Boozer is a key on the Utah Jazz for his points and rebounds. Although, Paul Millsap has filled in for Boozer well, having both Boozer and Millsap is ideal since they can spell each other. Boozer is a great asset to the Jazz, and he and Deron Williams have a connection unlike any other point guard and power forward in the league. They are yet to play together this season.

The list goes on and on with Brevin Knight, Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harpring, Mehmet Okur, Jarron Collins, and Kyle Korver all missing games at some point. The Jazz cannot gain any sort of rhythm with all of the injuries and are hoping that once everyone is becomes healthy, they will stay that way for the remainder of the season. The Jazz have already had more players miss games then they did all of last year. Hopefully once everyone comes back, Jerry Sloan will be able to mold everyone back into one team, and they will be able to play with the efficiency they did last year.

Every team has to deal with injuries and the Jazz have dealt with them relatively well considering how many they have had. A team’s depth really shows when injuries occur. Hopefully, for Jazz fans everywhere, they will not have to use their depth much longer.
