Gerrit Blank a 14-year old German boy, was on his way home from school when he saw a fireball from the sky heading straight towards him.  The white-hot meteorite traveling at 3,000 mph hit the boy and bounced onto the ground so hard it left a 12 inch crater in the tarmac and a three inch scar on the boy’s hand.

The boy reported to have seen the fireball which hit his hand, and then upon impact the meteor made an enormous bang that left the boy’s ears ringing for hours.  The impact from the object sent him flying. 

Scientists are now studying the pea-sized meteor.  The meteor crashed in Essen Germany and scientists have proven that the rock is from outer space through chemical testing.  The odds of an individual being hit by a meteorite are over one in 100 million. 

Generally, meteorites break apart or explode in the atmosphere before they make it to ground.  Of those meteorites that do make it to earth, about six in seven land in water since the earth is covered by 75% water. 

There is only one other known case where a meteorite hit a human.  The softball-sized meteor crashed through the roof of an Alabama house in 1954.  After going through the roof and ceiling, it bounced off the furniture and hit housewife Ann Hodges who was napping on the couch.  The meteor that struck Ann, left a large bruise on her hip.

No humans have been reported to have been killed by falling space rocks.  However they have crashed into vehicles.  Generally when these rocks hit the ground they explode; which makes these rocks very valuable to scientists and collectors.  

Now can you imagine how cool this boy will feel when he’s at school?  He got hit by a meteorite on the hand and has a three inch scar.  Teenage boys like having scars because it makes them look tough, plus this one actually has a really cool story to go with it.  Can you imagine being able to say that you are one of two people in the world that has been hit by a meteorite?

This boy will be in seventh heaven, with all of the girls talking to him and asking him about it.  And I’m sure he has been on the news.  He became famous overnight.  I am going to go ahead and make a wild guess that his popularity and social life just increased dramatically.
