The following techniques, although under heavy debate, are still legal in the U.S., and are used on detainees, POWs, and other people the U.S. interrogates. Careful; these photos are very graphic and disturbing.




John McCain endured horrific torture during his time as a POW in Vietnam. He was shot down in 1967 while on a bombing mission, and he was captured and held as a prisoner of war. Interestingly, it’s hard to pin down his position on whether the U.S. has the right to torture the people it captures.




By now you have heard about the Austrian man who locked his daughter in the basement, where she has been for the last 24 years, and raped her on a regular basis, producing as many as seven children with her.




Actor Richard Gere, known as “Hollywood’s most outspoken Buddhist,” joined the protests centered around the Olympic torch in San Francisco today. He is encouraging people to act peacefully.




Thirty-seven people were arrested as Olympic torch-bearers attempted to proceed through France on this leg of the torch’s journey to China. The final leg of the relay, through Paris, was cancelled after activists tried on several occasions to grab the torch, douse it with water, and stop the procession from continuing.
